In the year 2017, the society organised a 'Prestige Walk' in order to show solidarity with all those who had survived "Acid Attacks". The occasion was graced by Honourable Speaker of Lok Sabha Smt. Sumitra Mahajan as the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries. The society also supported all the survivors financially by rewarding every one of them with Rs. 11,000/-.
Acid attack is usually considered as a gender-based violence i.e. a crime against women, but that is not the case anymore. There is a growing number of men and children who have survived acid attacks. The thought behind Prestige Walk was to retrieve the idea of beauty, as the survivors proudly walked the ramp, wearing beautiful Indian ensembles and leaving behind all their imperfections. A play depicting the horrors a survivor goes through helped people understand that in what way they can support them. 29 survivors who came from different walks of life participated in the “Prestige Walk”. Survivors from India and Abroad participated from the age group 5yrs to 55 years from men , women and children.
Our prime objective through this program was to spread awareness on how a single attack can injure the victim not only physically, but financially and psychologically as well. Infact, the torture doesn’t limit itself to the victim. The entire family goes through that difficult phase. Through ‘Prestige Walk’ it was our chance as a society to show solidarity with those brave survivors and salute them for their courage.
We believe that through ‘Prestige Walk’, we were able to boost their morale, re-establish their self-esteem, fill them with a sense of accomplishment and encourage them to be a part of the mainstream society.
Inclusivity is a key aspect of advancing LGBTQ+ rights and ensuring equal treatment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Recognizing the intersectionality of these identities is crucial. For instance, a transgender woman who is a mother may face unique challenges related to both her gender identity and her role as a parent. These occasions serve as a platform to discuss and address these intersecting issues.
Overall, it's essential to use these occasions to promote understanding, empathy and inclusivity. Celebrating Mothers' Day and LGBTQ+ Rights Day in a way that is inclusive of LGBTQ+ mothers and their families helps create a more accepting and diverse society.
