With this mindset the society started a Clothes and Utility Bank. #Clothes&UtiltyBank
Clothes distribution drives were being done for a long time, but it was in 2017 that the society decided to open a Clothes Bank, where donations were accepted all round the year, therefore from an occasional activity it became a regular event.
We have about 50+ institutions supporting the society by generously donating clothes and utility items. Till date with the support of several individuals, educational institutions and organizations of Dehradun, we have helped almost 3,20,000 people (mainly children, as major donations come from schools) all throughout the year.
Receiving/Collecting Donations- We collect old clothes and utility items such as utensils, rugs, bags, caps, purses, furniture, fixtures, shoes, books, accessories, electronics items, toys and decorative items from several individuals, institutions and organisations by organising Clothes and Utility Items Collection Camps. And for the convenience of our donors we have ‘drop-off’ collection centres in different corners of the city.
These collected clothes and utility items then undergo the time consuming process of Segregation, where clothes are segregated on the basis of season, gender, and size, while utility items are segregated as per usability. Our society volunteers as well as volunteers from different institutions associate with us, and participate in the segregation process.
All the segregated clothes and utility items are then received by the needy hand. We identify the areas where people are in need of clothes and utility items and a research is conducted based on aspects such as number of people, gender, and age group. For utility items such as furniture and fixtures, we identify areas or organisations in need. Donations are regularly carried out from our Society’s head office. The best part of our donation is that we let the beneficiaries choose the items as per their need and choice.
Gradually our Clothes Bank has diversified to “Clothes and Utility Bank”.
Uniforms received as donations are meticulously stripped off their school logo/badges before being segmented by their grade level, and are then carefully packed to be distributed amongst the lesser privileged schools, thus bringing a sense of uniformity amongst its recipients.
Course books received as donations are duly refurbished (if required) and then carefully bundled based on their educational utility before being donated to schools where recipients are the students coming from lesser privileged families.
